A humble ballpoint pen is the tool Daniele Buetti uses to 'scar'
the otherwise flawless models which saturate the pages of fashion magazines.
Does this 'branding' make us see them as human, as vulnerable, or does it force
them into becoming a commodity irretrievably? The other day a tattoo-artist friend
revealed to me that clients can pay tattoo parlours to brand them, telling me a
particularly horrific tale of a gentleman who, having lost a bet on a sporting
match, was branded from his ear down to his mouth 'Chelsea Smile' style. In a
world where we are faced with victims of facial disfigurement every day this
behaviour is beyond me. Perhaps we shouldn't be given the opportunity to
re-brand our bodies.
